Australian Super League player Bevan French has firmly stated that he would not entertain the idea of representing England in rugby, should the opportunity arise. French, who has made a remarkable impact in the Super League, particularly as a halfback, has won the prestigious Man of Steel award in 2023.
Having previously been a standout outside back in the NRL, French has consistently proven his prowess, earning a spot in the competition's team of the year for 2020, 2022, and 2023. His contributions have significantly aided the Wigan Warriors in clinching consecutive Super League titles, and he was named player of the grand final in 2024.
In a recent segment with Sky Sports, French emphasized his Australian roots and the competitive landscape regarding positions available for national representation. He expressed his reluctance to don the England jersey, especially with the historical rivalry as they face off against Australia in this year's Ashes series-the first encounter in over twenty years.
French remarked, "I can't do that. I was Australian born and bred," highlighting the significance of his origins. He acknowledged the talent pool ahead of him in the race for a spot, mentioning names like Harry Smith, Mikey Lewis, George Williams, and AJ Brimson, among potential contenders. "You still have to look at the actual England players who are in contention to play in the halves," he added, affirming the fierce competition for the spots available.
