Forward duo's contract clauses expose performance pressure

LeagueNews.co | Jason Patrick

Game time clauses have been unveiled for seasoned forwards Christian Welch at the Melbourne Storm, and David Klemmer at the Wests Tigers.

Both veterans are set to go off-contract by the end of 2025, but there are mutual options in play that could see them stick with their current clubs until 2026.

To lock in these mutual options, it's a team effort - both the club and player need to see eye to eye on the contract extension.

While the players could explore other opportunities, reports suggest that the clubs will have to exercise these options if certain performance-based benchmarks are met on the field during the 2025 season.

Welch will need to step up by playing in at least 18 matches in 2024 or snagging a State of Origin call-up to secure his spot.

Time will tell how these contracts play out in the game of Rugby League.
