St George Illawarra Dragons coach Shane Flanagan expressed frustration over a controversial decision in a recent match that hampered his team's performance. Following a narrow loss to the New Zealand Warriors by just four points, Flanagan voiced his bewilderment regarding the officiating, stating he no longer "knows the rules" of rugby league.
The pivotal moment came in the 63rd minute when Adam Pompey scored the Warriors' first try. Flanagan's ire was directed at the no-call for obstruction, as Mararta Niukore was seen to impede Dragons' five-eighth Lyhkan King-Togia prior to the try being awarded. Although the Dragons appealed for a review citing a clear obstruction, the four-pointer was ultimately upheld.
In the post-match press conference, Flanagan took the initiative to address the controversial decision, even though it was not a question posed to him. "I know you haven't asked the question, but I am going to give an answer," he stated, highlighting the inconsistency in officiating. He remarked, "It was really tough for us that what was an obstruction last week is not an obstruction this week."
