As the NRL finals approach, the Cronulla Sharks are facing considerable challenges, marked by a troubling losing streak. The team has slipped in form, losing four out of their last five games.
The Sharks are set to host an elimination final next weekend, but their recent performances raise concerns about their readiness. Their struggles began with a surprising defeat to the St George Illawarra Dragons on August 9, followed by losses to the Canberra Raiders and the Parramatta Eels, along with a narrow win against the Gold Coast Titans.
In their latest match against the Melbourne Storm, which ended in a last-minute heartbreak for the Sharks, officiating controversies took center stage. The Sharks initially fell behind 12-0, clawing their way back before suffering a defeat due to questionable calls.
Head coach Craig Fitzgibbon did not hesitate to express his frustration regarding the officiating. He cited a critical forward pass leading to one of the Storm's tries and a disallowed try for Sua Fa'alogo, which he felt was mishandled by the officials.
"If you don't know what a forward pass looks like at this current point of your career, I don't know either," Fitzgibbon asserted.
He emphasized the need for consistent officiating, stating, "It's not going to change what happens next week either." Fitzgibbon concluded with a call for the integrity of the game to be upheld, criticizing the inconsistency in referees' decisions.
Sharing similar sentiments, captain Cameron McInnes remarked that players are often left uncertain about the application of the six-again rule from week to week, which complicates their preparations as they head into a crucial finals series.
