Brad Fittler, initially viewed as the leading candidate to take over as head coach of the Australian Kangaroos following Mal Meninga's appointment as the coach of the Perth Bears, has officially withdrawn from consideration for the position.

Now that he has stepped back, former Melbourne Storm hooker Cameron Smith and ex-Brisbane Broncos coach Kevin Walters have emerged as viable contenders for the coaching position.
