David Fifita has shared how his reunion with Wayne Bennett at South Sydney has breathed new life into his career, particularly after enduring a challenging 2025 season. The 25-year-old is optimistic about regaining his Queensland jersey, despite facing three ankle surgeries that limited him to just eight games in his final season with the Gold Coast under former coach Des Hasler.
During a recent season launch event in Brisbane for the Indigenous health initiative Deadly Choices, Fifita spoke frankly about his struggles over the past year. "You people probably don't know what I have been through mentally. Having three surgeries on your ankle takes a toll on you," he admitted.
Fifita expressed that he has moved past this challenging period, crediting his recovery to the support of those around him, especially Bennett. "I am over that now. I have the right people around me and a good mentor in Wayne," he said.
Reflecting on his long history with Bennett, he stated, "I started my journey [at Brisbane] with Wayne back when I was 16 in high school. To be reunited with him means a lot." He added, "He can give me a hug and be honest with me," highlighting the deep trust he feels in their relationship.
Fifita emphasized the importance of having someone who believes in him: "I have someone to listen to me, have faith in me and trust in me. I felt that connection with Wayne." Despite his struggles, he remains a powerful force on the field, known for his explosive playing style, and is eager to leave behind the underwhelming performance of the Titans over the past five years.
