Former Wallabies coach Michael Cheika is advancing toward a head coaching role in the NRL by accepting a full-time assistant position with the Sydney Roosters.
Cheika's coaching career includes a stint as the national coach of Argentina and several club roles, notably leading the NSW Waratahs to the Super Rugby title in 2014.
However, his experience in rugby league has been relatively limited, having only coached Lebanon during their World Cup campaign in 2021 and preparing for the upcoming 2026 tournament, alongside a consultancy role with the Roosters in 2020.
While he was previously linked to the Newcastle coaching vacancy, that position has now been filled by Roosters assistant Justin Holbrook, creating an opportunity for Cheika within the Roosters.
In his new role, Cheika will focus on the forwards and collaborate with coaches across the club's development pathways.
Head coach Trent Robinson, a close friend of Cheika, expressed confidence in his new assistant, stating that Cheika would bring a valuable perspective to the club. "Michael and I have had a strong relationship for many years, and I've always admired the way he leads and challenges athletes," Robinson mentioned in a statement.
