Manly assistant coach Michael Ennis is reportedly poised to leave the club at the season's end after declining a 12-month contract extension. According to a report from The Sydney Morning Herald, Ennis plans to pursue other assistant coaching roles, with the Dragons already showing interest in the former premiership winner.
Ennis aspires to become an NRL head coach eventually and has been considered by Manly CEO Tony Mestrov as a potential successor to current head coach Anthony Seibold. Although Seibold is under contract until 2027, he has expressed a desire to transition into a management position after his current deal ends.
Both Ennis and Sea Eagles legend Matt Ballin have been frequently mentioned in discussions about Manly's coaching succession plan, making Ennis' decision to leave somewhat surprising. The report from SMH suggests that Ennis is eager to take on a role with more responsibility, as his current part-time position at Manly permits him to balance his media commitments with Fox League.
As Manly's attack coach, Ennis primarily focuses on the Sea Eagles' spine. The club recently extended an offer for him to continue his role in 2026, especially with halfback Jamal Fogarty joining from the Raiders and promising rookie Joey Walsh progressing through the ranks following the departure of Daly Cherry-Evans.
However, the upcoming final match against the Warriors at 4 Pines Park could mark Ennis' last appearance with the Sea Eagles, as the Dragons are already linked to his potential services for the following season. Coach Shane Flanagan is looking for an assistant to replace Ryan Carr, who is set to take over at Castleford next season.

Ennis' ambition for better opportunities and his goal of becoming an NRL head coach could require him to reduce his media participation with Fox League. Nevertheless, the Dragons aren't his only option, as his previous club, Cronulla, may also present an appealing opportunity for him.
