Eighth Spot Showdown: Three Teams, 16 Matches Left

NRL Rd 25 - Sea Eagles v Dolphins

Round 25 was exciting, with top teams showcasing their talent on a thrilling Friday night. The competition for the eighth spot is heating up after a significant loss for the Roosters has paved the way for a potential fairytale farewell for Manly.

With just 16 matches left before the finals, three teams remain in contention for one crucial spot in the playoffs.

REVENGE OF THE SMITH

Cameron Smith reigns supreme at AAMI Park, but Sandon Smith aims to claim the title for a night as the Roosters look for a rare victory against the Storm. The Roosters have only managed one win against Melbourne this decade, with the Storm eliminating them from the finals in the last two seasons. They will be without halfback Sam Walker, who is in concussion protocols, leaving the team lacking in direction and creativity. This situation creates an opportunity for Sandon Smith, who hasn't played since being concussed against the Storm in round 21. A win for the Roosters, coupled with some favorable results, could secure them a top-eight spot and prevent an impending elimination match against Souths next week. Conversely, a loss would open the door for the Sea Eagles or the Dolphins to make a move. The silver lining for the Roosters is that the Storm are expected to be without key players Jahrome Hughes and Harry Grant, who are striving to maintain their minor premiership aspiration.

PHINS DOWN

Dolphins supporters might be regretting the calendar changes, as August has proven unforgiving for the league's newest franchise. A finals berth seemed likely after their gritty win in New Zealand during round 22, but their recent form has been dismal, with three consecutive losses and an alarming 160 points conceded. Their defensive plight continued on Saturday, exemplifying a tough late-season struggle, with the team losing 10 out of their last 13 games in August since their inception. Despite these issues, they have a chance to surpass the Roosters on points differential if they win against the bottom-placed Titans, whom they previously defeated in round 5. The Dolphins will conclude their season against a Raiders team that might already have the minor premiership secured, potentially leading to player rest during that match.
