The Parramatta Eels began their 2025 NRLW season with a thrilling 18-16 victory over the Cronulla Sharks, avenging last year's near-miss that left them just outside the finals.
Coach Steve Georgallis emphasized the motivation this season, stating there was a definite "fire in the belly" among the players after finishing fifth last year.
He recalled, "We thought we had the team to make the finals and we probably looked back at that Cronulla game we should have won," indicating that this history added urgency and focus for the team's performance.
Key contributions came from halfback Rachael Pearson's tactical kicks and debutant Rory Owen's impressive runs.
The Eels' defense was formidable, featuring standout performances from Elsie Albert and Chloe Jackson, who also made her mark in attack by scoring two tries.
Despite Cronulla fielding 13 players from their recent grand final squad, the Eels' combination of seasoned players and fresh talent proved effective, showcasing their potential for the season ahead.
The win not only sets a positive tone for Parramatta but also reflects their commitment to building on previous disappointments.
