In a thrilling NRLW season opener on Thursday night, the Cronulla Sharks lost to the Parramatta Eels 18-16 at Sharks Stadium, intensifying their growing rivalry.
The match mirrored their previous encounter last season, but this time, the Sharks were left disappointed despite a valiant effort.
After trailing 12-6 at halftime, following a try from prop Filomina Hanisi, Cronulla fought back in the second half.
Despite losing Hanisi (knee injury) and centre Annessa Biddle (cramp), the Sharks saw utility Nakia Davis-Welsh and hooker Quincy Dodd each score, briefly putting Cronulla ahead.
However, Parramatta surged in the final moments to secure the victory.
The Sharks displayed tenacity, continually challenging the Eels' defense.
"After being denied several times by desperate defence or poor execution," they eventually celebrated Hanisi's first NRLW try, which brought joy that quickly turned to despair when she was sidelined with her knee injury shortly after halftime.
The Eels responded swiftly, extending their lead to 14-6 with a penalty goal by Pearson.
Undeterred, "the Sharks responded via the lively Davis-Welsh in the 44th minute." Displaying agility, she executed a brilliant solo effort after setting up a break with an offload to five-eighth Georgia Hannaway.
The match showcased not only the competitive spirit of both teams but also highlighted the resilience of the Sharks, even in the face of adversity.
