The Parramatta Eels are set to part ways with halfback Dean Hawkins as they bring Jonah Pezet on board for the 2026 season. Reports indicate that Pezet will join the Eels for one year before transitioning to the Brisbane Broncos at the beginning of 2027.

Pezet made the decision to leave the Melbourne Storm following the re-signing of Jahrome Hughes, which allowed him to activate a clause in his contract. Although the deal isn't finalized yet, sources suggest that it's very close to completion, with the Eels initially intending to sign Pezet for just one season while they focus on developing their youth.

Initially, the Eels had hoped to pair Joash Papalii with Mitchell Moses in the halves for the 2026 season, following Dylan Brown's exit to the Newcastle Knights. However, Pezet is now expected to fill the number six jersey. As Papalii is next in line for the position, The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Hawkins has been granted a release from his contract with the Eels, allowing him to pursue opportunities in the English Super League.

While the specific club hasn't been disclosed, it's indicated that Hawkins is in discussions for a multi-year contract to head to the UK starting in 2026, with aims to elevate his profile for possible NRL returns in the future.
