The signing of premiership-winning five-eighth Jarome Luai by the Parramatta Eels is controversial, calling into question the team's current strategy amidst a challenging season.
As Luai prepares to join the Eels, his potential impact on the club's younger playmakers, such as Joash Papalii, Ronald Volkman, and Lorenzo Talataina, is a concern.
Analyst Scott Pryde expressed skepticism about the decision during an episode of the NRL Contract Show, suggesting it might hinder the development of young players who are ready for first-grade action.
He noted, "The Tigers didn't have a choice. They had won multiple wooden spoons and needed to bring in someone who knew how to win, and Luai was worth paying overs for at that point."
Pryde highlighted that coach Jason Ryles has emphasized a commitment to long-term strategies, previously releasing multiple players to reshape the squad.
"Ryles came in and got rid of a number of players," he explained, pointing out that last year's drop of Dylan Brown and the signing of Jonah Pezet are part of a broader vision.
He questioned the logic of adding Luai at this juncture, stating, "It makes no sense to me." He suggested that with the current talent, including Volkman, a one-year signing may not be beneficial.
"Luai is now going to come in and kick [Volkman] back to the Cup, for a one-year play," he remarked, asserting that this approach does not align with the Eels' needs for a championship contender.
Pryde concluded, "Are the Eels a win-now team? The answer is no. They aren't going to win a premiership because they bring Jarome Luai in."
