The Parramatta Eels have officially expressed their desire to sign the newly available Mitch Barnett.
After being released from his contract with the New Zealand Warriors on compassionate grounds, Barnett will depart at the end of this season.
The NSW Blues representative is in high demand, with Parramatta emerging as a strong contender for his services.
According to the Daily Telegraph, Eels coach Jason Ryles has openly stated that the club is keen on acquiring him for the upcoming year.
"Yeah, (he's) certainly someone we would potentially look at," Ryles revealed.
"He's an Origin forward. I think that's an area of the roster that we can certainly improve or strengthen is probably a better word."
"I think us, like many clubs, will obviously be looking in that space."
Rumors are also circulating about interest from the Manly Sea Eagles and the Brisbane Broncos in securing the Australian representative's signature.
Manly is in urgent need of some additional strength up front, while the Broncos have the budget available after Payne Haas's departure.
A successful signing of Barnett would be a significant achievement for the Eels, especially as the career of Paulo nears its end and he is set to become a free agent.
Bringing in Barnett could be an ideal replacement for the 20-time Samoan representative.
