Golden Boot or not, Dylan Brown's play for New Zealand can be the key for his record-breaking contract

Despite not securing the Golden Boot, Dylan Brown's performance for New Zealand is poised to be instrumental as he transitions to a record-breaking contract.

Having signed the most lucrative deal in rugby league history, it would have been poetic for Brown to end 2025 with the prestigious Golden Boot as the year's standout player in Test football. However, his omission from the award, especially in favor of Harry Grant, raises eyebrows. It's surprising that the accolade won't adorn Brown's collection as he prepares to join Newcastle.

Controversial choices in individual awards are common in rugby league, and this situation becomes more perplexing upon closer examination. While Grant performed consistently in Australia's 3-0 series victory, he only earned his man-of-the-match award in the inconsequential third Test and failed to secure player-of-the-series honors, which went to Cameron Munster.

Efforts to rationalize Grant's win often lead to convoluted reasoning, yet the overwhelming sentiment in the aftermath is one of disbelief regarding Brown's exclusion from the top honor.

Brown's gameplay speaks volumes, and ahead of the $13 million contract he is about to sign with the Knights, his recent performances showcase the potential for both player and club to maximize what is poised to be the biggest contract in rugby league history.

Throughout the Pacific Championship, Brown emerged as a standout player, providing seven assists and scoring three tries while showcasing his skills against competitors like Samoa's Jarome Luai and Tonga's Isaiya Katoa. He consistently dominated during all three of New Zealand's victories.

In the final against Samoa, Brown was exceptional; he assisted three tries, made a crucial tackle to prevent another, and outperformed every opposition player in terms of yards gained. His display reflected a player who was not only in command of his skills but also understood his role within the team's framework.

Brown efficiently moved the ball into advantageous positions and appeared notably agile, making the most of his abilities while reminding fans that, despite a rocky season with Parramatta, his talent is undeniable.
