The St George Illawarra Dragons have officially announced the signing of highly-rated twin brothers, Alexander and Cornelius Pupualii, both 16 years old, in a significant setback for the Penrith Panthers.
The brothers, who are part of the Panthers' junior setup, were described as promising prospects for the future.
Cornelius stands at 193cm and weighs 100kg, positioning him as a valuable addition to the Dragons' back-line.
Alexander, a 119kg second-rower, has faced challenges this season due to an ACL injury, which has kept him from participating in junior football.
Cornelius has excelled while playing for the Panthers' Harold Matthews Cup team (Under-17s).
As they approach their 17th birthdays later this year, the Dragons are optimistic about their potential inclusion in the first-grade squad for years to come.
In an official statement released on Tuesday, St George Illawarra expressed their excitement, saying, "The Dragons are pleased to confirm that talented teenagers Alexander and Cornelius Pupualii have agreed to deals with the club.
The two will be contracted to the club until at least the end of the 2027 season."
Originally from Mount Druitt, the Pupualii brothers played their junior rugby league with the St Marys Saints, a stronghold within Panthers territory.
Penrith faced stiff competition to keep the twins, with clubs like the Raiders, Rabbitohs, Tigers, Sharks, and Cowboys also interested in recruiting them.
Ultimately, the Dragons secured the brothers after a meeting with coach Shane Flanagan.
Alexander noted his gratitude in an interview, stating, "I'm grateful.
I just want to give back to my family.
I'm ready to work hard and I'm ready to pull on this jersey."
