Dragons go down in Magic Round heartbreaker

The Dragons faced a heart-wrenching defeat against the Eels, ending 12-10 in their NRLW Magic Round match at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The weekend's wild weather in Newcastle contributed to a muddy field, but both teams exhibited strong offensive plays despite the conditions.

Tyra Ekepati, who joined the Dragons this week after leaving the Roosters, received her debut jersey during the match. Additionally, Hannah Southwell marked her milestone 40th NRLW appearance, adding to the occasion's significance.

Although the Dragons struggled in the first half, Nathan Cross' team showed a commendable resolve, managing to secure a lead at halftime. Raecene McGregor spent 10 minutes in the sin bin, but Margot Vella's performance-stepping in as fullback in place of Teagan Berry-was crucial. Vella tallied a try, two line breaks, 128 run metres, and seven tackle breaks in the first half alone.

Unfortunately, McGregor could not complete the match due to a head knock, allowing Parramatta to mount a late comeback. A powerful effort from Elsie Albert proved pivotal in securing the Eels' victory. Just before halftime, a remarkable break by Margot Vella set the stage for a critical moment, as she scored the first points of the game after receiving a late offload from Shenai Lendill.
