Dragons coach Shane Flanagan has reached breaking point, storming out of his press conference in frustration after his team's "disgraceful" performance left their finals dreams shattered.

The St George Illawarra Dragons almost staged a remarkable comeback for the ages, but Flanagan was left seething at his side's shortcomings.

The cellar-dwelling Eels shocked the Dragons, taking a commanding 44-12 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining before the game turned on its head.

In a stunning turn of events, the Dragons roared back with five tries in the final moments, falling just short of completing the biggest comeback in NRL history.

The Dragons' late surge saw them score an impressive 28 points in a mere 10 minutes, tantalizingly close to eclipsing the record for the largest successful comeback in NRL history, which stands at 26 points.

The defeat proved to be the final straw for Flanagan, who had seen enough of his team's lackluster performance.
