Dragons Eye Drinkwater as Fullback Solution

The North Queensland Cowboys reportedly may allow Scott Drinkwater to depart at the conclusion of the 2026 NRL season, should he successfully negotiate a deal with the St George Illawarra Dragons.

The Dragons are actively seeking a new fullback, particularly as Clint Gutherson has been underperforming in the initial weeks of the 2026 season.

With Gutherson out injured for the next few weeks, coach Shane Flanagan faces a dilemma regarding his return, especially if Tyrell Sloan performs well in his absence.

Adding to the complexity, with Sloan also off-contract and unlikely to remain with the team next year, the Dragons must consider alternative options for their number one position.

Initially interested in Dolphins fullback Trai Fuller, discussions fell through as Fuller requested an additional year, which the Dragons were not prepared to offer at this time.

There have been ongoing talks regarding Jahream Bula, who holds an unactivated option for next season, but Drinkwater has also emerged as a potential candidate.

The Cowboys are expected to allow him to leave if he desires, though they will not force him out before his contract concludes.

The Dragons are keen to pursue Drinkwater, who has established himself as one of the top attacking players in the NRL and has been a standout performer for the Cowboys.

Although significant financial resources will be needed to secure his services, it is believed that negotiations for a possible transfer at the end of the season are currently in progress.
