Dragons’ comeback falls short in Townsville

The Dragons' valiant efforts fell short as they were unable to overcome the Cowboys in a thrilling clash at Queensland Country Bank Stadium on Sunday night.

Despite facing adversity with Margot Vella's injury early in the second half, Jamie Soward's squad showed true grit and determination to claw their way back into the game, eventually levelling the scores with a quarter of the match remaining.

However, the Cowboys managed to pull away in the dying stages, leaving the Red V still searching for their first win of the 2024 season.

Jakiya Whitfeld extended the hosts' lead with a try 15 minutes in, capitalizing on a mistake from the Dragons in defusing a kick, with Kirra Dibb converting to make it 12-0.

But the Dragons fought back strongly, with Kasey Reh scoring her first NRLW try from dummy half, following a powerful run from Sara Sautia.

This marked a memorable moment for the 18-year-old, who had already impressed in her debut in Round 1 with a stellar defensive effort, making 35 tackles in just over 50 minutes.

Despite the Dragons' spirited comeback, they were unable to hold off the Cowboys' late surge, leaving them still in pursuit of that elusive first victory of the season.

The Red V will be looking to bounce back in their next match with renewed determination and resolve, as they aim to turn their fortunes around and get their season back on track.
