'We're putting all the eggs in that basket': Dragons gear up for brutal top-two test as they aim to break finals drought
The Dragons, known for their hot and cold performances this season, are gearing up for a crucial test that will determine their standing as a genuine top-eight team.
While the AFL has announced Katy Perry as the headline act for this year's pre-game grand final entertainment, the NRL spotlight is on the Dragons as they prepare to face the three-time defending champions in a tough home game.
Despite being written off at the start of the season, the Dragons find themselves in ninth place heading into round 21, just outside the top eight on points difference.
Under the guidance of new coach Shane Flanagan, the team has shown flashes of brilliance as a potential finals contender.
However, inconsistent performances have highlighted the gap between their best and worst performances.
With only two close games this season, the Dragons will face a defining fortnight as they take on Penrith at home before traveling to play the ladder-leading Storm.
"It's a challenging time of year to face these tough opponents," says captain Ben Hunt, acknowledging the team's previous victory over Penrith earlier in the season.
"Facing top teams allows us to assess the strengths and weaknesses and see if we still have room for improvement."
As they brace themselves for the upcoming matches, the Dragons are ready to lay it all on the line and show their true mettle on the field.
