The Sydney Roosters have signed Junior Tupou from the Dolphins, allowing the Dolphins to pursue Selwyn Cobbo before the June 30 transfer deadline.
Tupou was initially set to play in the Dolphins' upcoming match against South Sydney but was replaced by Max Feagai shortly before the game.
Reports indicate that the move is aimed at creating salary cap space for the Dolphins in hopes of acquiring Cobbo, who has been signed to join for the 2026 season.
The Dolphins anticipate that the Broncos may release Cobbo earlier, though the Broncos have been firm in their stance.
Despite being relegated to reserve grade, Broncos coach Michael Maguire believes Cobbo still has a significant role for the team in 2025.
On SEN radio, former Broncos player Denan Kemp disclosed that the Broncos have specifically stated there is only one club Cobbo cannot join early: "I got it on good authority that there was only one club the Broncos said 'you're not allowed to go to early'.
And it was the Dolphins." This rivalry complicates the situation, as both teams are based in Brisbane, making it unlikely the Broncos would facilitate Cobbo's transfer to their local competitor.
As the clock ticks toward the transfer deadline, the Dolphins aim to finalize the deal and bolster their squad.
The pressure mounts on the Broncos to consider a release, but their current stance remains stalwart against any transaction that would aid their cross-town rivals.
