Dolphins teammates become World Cup rivals

Lemuelu training in Samoa Camp

Fiji utility Kurt Donoghoe will return to Newcastle's McDonald Jones Stadium for the World Cup, named at five-eighth against the Cook Islands.

The Newcastle junior is set for his eighth Fiji appearance as the nation opens its campaign.

The 2026 Rugby League World Cup begins Thursday, October 15, with Dolphins players representing six nations across the opening round.

Australia faces New Zealand at Sydney's Allianz Stadium, where Dolphins winger Jack Bostock is poised for his international debut.

New Zealand's Jeremy Marshall-King, Jamayne Isaako and Kodi Nikorima start at hooker, wing and five-eighth respectively.

Australia beat New Zealand 22-10 at the 2024 Pacific Championships.

On Friday at Sydney's CommBank Stadium, Samoa starts against France with Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow at fullback, Francis Molo in the front row and Connelly Lemuelu in the second row.

Tabuai-Fidow played on the wing for Samoa at the previous World Cup. Lemuelu debuted against Australia in the 2023 Pacific Championships.

Molo is preparing for his seventh Samoa appearance and last represented the nation at the 2025 Pacific Championships.

Saturday's England-Tonga match in Perth features England centre Herbie Farnworth, preparing for appearance 10, and lock Morgan Knowles, set for his 12th.

Both played at the 2022 World Cup. Tonga co-captain Isaiya Katoa is set for his 12th international appearance, while Kulikefu Finefeuiaki is in the extended squad.

Dolphins head coach Kristian Woolf will lead Tonga as Fiji and the Cook Islands complete the opening weekend.
