Dolphins Extend Contract with Rising Star

Brian Pouniu, a promising young player for the Dolphins, has reportedly secured a long-term contract extension with the club.

This skilled second-rower and centre participated in the pre-season challenge for the Redcliffe-based team and is poised to make his NRL debut later this year.

Considered one of the top young talents in rugby league, he represented the under-19 Queensland Maroons last season and has continually impressed as he navigates through the sport's developmental pathways.

There were indications that the Gold Coast Titans had shown interest in Pouniu; however, News Corp has reported that he has opted to stay with the Dolphins instead of pursuing a switch to the Titans.

Currently, Pouniu is part of the Dolphins' full-time squad this season, and he's expected to secure a place in the Top 30 for the upcoming seasons.

With Oryn Keeley (Melbourne Storm) set to leave at the end of this year and the potential for Tom Gilbert to focus more on the middle rather than the edges, a spot on the bench could become available for Pouniu.

The Dolphins will rely heavily on Kulikefu Finefeuiaki, who has had an impressive start as their primary second-rower in 2026, while other positions remain uncertain.

Initially starting his season in the centres, Pouniu is projected to transition to the second-row in the long-term, having already made a mark at QLD Cup level with an average of 144 metres and five offloads per game.

A three-year contract will keep him with the NRL's 17th club until at least the conclusion of the 2029 season.
