'They could have just as easily shown me the door': Why Spencer Leniu is determined to show his gratitude to the Roosters after inking a new deal
Spencer Leniu isn't afraid to admit that he was on shaky ground earlier this year, which is why the burly prop is hell-bent on repaying the Roosters.
According to a report by news.com.au, Leniu credits the unwavering loyalty of club officials during the tumultuous racism scandal at the beginning of the season as a key factor in his decision to extend his stay at Bondi Beach until 2027.
While Leniu may already be eyeing a fancier coffee order, his primary goal remains to show coach Trent Robinson and chairman Nick Politis his appreciation, acknowledging that they had every opportunity to cut ties with him after being slapped with an eight-game ban for racially abusing Ezra Mam during his Roosters debut in Sin City.
"You really discover who your true mates are when life throws you a curveball," remarked the formidable prop.
"That was a low point for me, but the fact that they stood by someone they barely knew at the time, they easily could have sent me packing.
"But they stood firm and believed in me as a person, and that's what swayed me to sign on the dotted line.
"Once I returned from the suspension, my sole focus has been on repaying the Roosters for their unwavering support during that difficult period."
