In an unusual move, the Australian Rugby League Commission announced at 6 am the appointments of Kevin Walters and Jess Skinner as the coaches for their national teams.
Reports had indicated for weeks that Walters would take the Kangaroos role, which comes with a three-game contract overseeing this year's Ashes tour to England.
This tour marks Australia's first bilateral series in England in over 20 years, placing Walters in a scrutinized position.
While a World Cup is scheduled for 2026, Walters will need to reapply to remain Kangaroos coach for that tournament.
Meanwhile, the ARLC confirmed that Jess Skinner will continue as Jillaroos coach until the conclusion of the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.
