The NRL's decision to relocate the Sharks' home final against North Queensland from Shark Park to Allianz Stadium has sparked controversy among players and fans alike.
Addin Fonua-Blake expressed frustration over the move, stating, "You work so hard during the year to get a home semi and for it to be taken away, it's unfair."
While the Sharks were optimistic that their match with the Cowboys would allow them to play at their local venue, the NRL's move reflects ongoing discussions about finals venues.
Shark Park's capacity has been reduced to 13,500 due to renovations, leading to increased scrutiny over its ability to host finals matches.
Fonua-Blake highlighted his concerns, noting, "To play in front of your home crowd, it feels like you have a 14th player on the field sometimes." He acknowledged that the situation was beyond the players' control.
A significant change made by the NRL last season grants the league the authority to determine finals locations.
Peter V'landys, Australian Rugby League Commission chairman, defended the decision by indicating that it prioritized the overall fan experience. He claimed many Sharks supporters preferred Allianz and emphasized ensuring greater accommodation for fans.
Despite the move, V'landys reassured fans that future suburban finals could still be possible, saying, "We're going to look at every game on its merits." However, he stressed that current standards of facilities must be met for finals hosting.
