Joseph Su'aalii believes that Angus Crichton's upcoming move to rugby union may encourage more NRL players to consider switching codes, especially with a home World Cup on the horizon serving as a significant incentive.
Crichton, who played with Su'aalii at the Sydney Roosters, is expected to leave the NRL after the 2026 season. Rugby Australia is poised to intensify its efforts to attract established league talent ahead of the 2027 World Cup.
Discussing Crichton's situation, Su'aalii emphasized that witnessing elite players successfully transition can inspire those still in the NRL. "You see one person do it, and the possibility opens up," Su'aalii told the Daily Telegraph.
"I watched Israel Folau go across, Wendell Sailor, Karmichael Hunt, you start thinking, 'Why not? I can do that as well.'"
At 22 years old, Su'aalii noted that this mindset is particularly prevalent among younger players but also resonates with veteran NRL stars contemplating their long-term options.
"That's been a key factor for a lot of young kids coming through, and even older players too," he said.
Crichton's physical attributes and strong work ethic have long made him an attractive candidate for rugby, and Su'aalii believes his former teammate possesses the qualities necessary to excel at Test level if given the opportunity. "I'm not sure exactly what path they'll take with Angus, but whatever his journey is, he works hard, he's tough as hell on the field, and he's a great person off it," Su'aalii added.
