Cowboys Struggle in Season Opener Loss

The North Queensland Cowboys kicked off their 2026 season raising significant concerns about their discipline, fitness, and defensive strength after suffering a heavy 44-16 loss to the Wests Tigers at Leichhardt Oval, marking the Tigers' biggest victory to begin an NRL season.

Although the Cowboys managed to score first with a penalty goal, their defense quickly fell apart under persistent pressure and a series of six-again calls.

In the first 20 minutes alone, the Tigers received six set restarts, forcing the Cowboys into lengthy defensive sets that severely fatigued their forward pack.

The defining moment of the Cowboys' defensive failure occurred when Adam Doueihi managed to drag himself over the line directly under the posts.

In spite of having several defenders in place, Doueihi broke through inadequate resistance and grounded the ball-this try starkly highlighted the exhaustion and lack of defensive strength within the Cowboys' lineup.

Things worsened when Kai O'Donnell was sin-binned for repeated violations, leaving the Cowboys to defend a man down while already under immense pressure.

Due to Reuben Cotter's absence for personal reasons, the rearranged forward pack struggled to manage the Tigers' advancing play.

As the game unfolded, defensive gaps widened, allowing debutant Kai Pearce-Paul to score twice in the first half.

Unforced errors hindered the Cowboys' attempts to mount a response, including a critical knock-on while attacking within the Tigers' 20, revealing ongoing fatigue in their line speed and defensive contact.
