As the Cowboys NRLW team prepares for their inaugural finals appearance against the Sharks in Townsville this Saturday, they are also dedicated to fostering future talent off the field.

Co-captain Emma Manzelmann, who hails from Mackay, reflects on her own journey in the sport. She had to leave North Queensland to start her NRLW career, but is thankful that future players won't have to face the same challenges she did.

"When I went through there were no pathways, it was very hit and miss," she said.

"Now there's a stepping stone [outside of the major cities] for a little girl or teenager right through to adulthood."

Since their entry into the competition in 2023, when they finished second-last, the Cowboys have been on the rise. In 2024, they just missed the top four, ending the season in sixth place, but this year they have secured fourth and a spot in the finals.

Throughout the season, the team's strategy has centered on strong defense first and then focusing on their offensive plays, while also building their confidence in competitions.

Similar to the Cowboys men's team, the women's team was established to provide local athletes with opportunities at an elite level.
