The North Queensland Cowboys have officially announced the re-signing of prop Kaiden Lahrs, though it is only for a one-year term.
This new contract extends Lahrs' deal until the end of 2027, rather than 2026, but allows him the option to explore the open market starting November 1 to discuss potential opportunities with other clubs if he desires.
This re-signing aligns with previous statements from coach Todd Payten, who indicated that securing Lahrs was a priority for the organization, with other contract situations, such as that of Matt Lodge, being addressed afterward.
Lahrs is the son of Tom Laroyd-Lahrs, a former Australian and New South Wales representative, and is highly regarded as one of the top young props in the league.
At just 20 years old, he has already made his debut in the NRL. Clint Zammit, the club's recruitment manager, expressed excitement over securing the young talent.
"We are delighted to extend Kaiden for 2027," Zammit stated.
He emphasized, "Kaiden and his family have made Townsville their home and the club was formed to ensure North Queensland kids don't have to leave home to play at the highest level."
"We believe Kaiden can be an elite front-rower at NRL level and envision him as a key long-term member of the forward pack," he added.
Zammit concluded, "A one-year extension allows additional time for both Kaiden and the club to work on a long-term extension which we hope keeps him at the Cowboys well into the future."
