Reed Mahoney remains optimistic about North Queensland's potential as they approach their elimination final against Cronulla at Allianz Stadium. The Cowboys have faced a tumultuous season, marked by significant defensive struggles.
Conceding 652 points, North Queensland holds the record for the most points allowed in the NRL era by any team reaching the top eight. Their season's low point came with an 82-12 defeat to the Sydney Roosters, compounded by a troubling 50-30 loss to Canberra last week.
Yet, the team has also pulled together for impressive victories, overcoming tough opponents like the Sydney Roosters (18-12), Penrith (26-12), and Canterbury (28-12). A high-scoring 46-34 win against the Sharks provided a much-needed confidence boost.
"the best and the worst this year has probably been too far apart for my liking and the club's liking," Mahoney remarked. He acknowledged the team's inconsistency but emphasized the moments they've managed to perform against top teams.
Mahoney, who has ten finals appearances under his belt, described the current playing group as "strong and connected." He believes their journey this season has solidified their belief in their capabilities.
"We deserve to be in the finals but now it is not about what you have done. It is about what you can do," he commented, noting the do-or-die nature of the upcoming match.
With half Tom Dearden returning from injury and two key players, Jake Clifford and Scott Drinkwater, Mahoney expressed confidence in the team's spine. "I love it. It is one of the most elite spines I have been part of," he stated, urging the players to lead by example defensively.
Mahoney concluded that the team's preparation will be pivotal as they strive to make a strong impression in the finals.
