The North Queensland Cowboys are making a last-minute adjustment ahead of their match against the Sydney Roosters on Thursday.
Forward John Bateman will sit out the game after experiencing "tightness" in his hamstring during Wednesday's captain's run.
This season has been particularly challenging for Bateman, who has only played in three matches due to a series of injuries.
On Wednesday morning, coach Todd Payten addressed the media to provide an update on his dynamic second-row player.
"Given the short turnaround it was always going to be a stretch, but we wanted to give him every opportunity to play," Payten shared with CODE Sports.
According to News Corp, Kai O'Donnell will be brought up from the reserves to fill Bateman's slot on the six-man bench.
In a related development, Soni Luke is set to make his second start at hooker for the Cowboys this year, following a commendable performance against the Brisbane Broncos last week.
Payten praised the Tongan international representative, who is stepping in for Reed Mahoney as he deals with concussion symptoms.
"I've been really impressed by his presence, his football understanding, his professionalism, and when he comes onto the field, he certainly adds a bit of spark and energy to the group," Payten commented on Tuesday.
