Couchman Faces Judiciary Over Controversial Tackle

Ryan Couchman of the Dragons is tackled while running with the ball in an NRL match

The NRL judiciary has called upon St George Illawarra forward Ryan Couchman to address concerns regarding a hip-drop tackle that may have concluded the season for Parramatta's J'Maine Hopgood.

Instead of assigning a standard suspension, the match review committee chose to escalate the matter directly to a hearing at NRL headquarters, scheduled for Tuesday night at 6pm (AEDT).

This approach is typically reserved for the most significant violations or for instances where the tackle's severity is debatable.

In a similar instance, former Manly prop Tof Sipley was the last men's player sent to the judiciary, ultimately facing a four-game suspension due to a hip-drop tackle in round seven of last year.

Should Couchman receive a suspension, it would pose a challenge for the Dragons as they seek their first win of the season.

The Red V have upcoming matches against Gold Coast, North Queensland, and Manly, making Couchman's presence crucial for their chances.

This potential suspension is particularly disheartening for Couchman, who only managed to play one game last season due to an ACL injury.

Couchman was sent to the sin bin in the first half of Sunday's 30-20 defeat to Parramatta for the tackle believed to have caused Hopgood's right ACL injury.

Post-match, Eels coach Jason Ryles commented that such tackles are likely when rule changes aim to accelerate the game.
