Corey Oates tackles uncertainties beyond Broncos contract

Off-contract Brisbane Broncos stalwart Corey Oates has spoken out about his uncertain future as he faces the possibility of leaving Red Hill after this season.

With the memories of the Broncos' heartbreaking NRL Grand Final defeat to the North Queensland Cowboys in 2015 still lingering, Oates finds himself in a new position as a player on the outskirts of the team, despite being a long-time fixture in the line-up.

Having clocked up an impressive 215 games and 121 tries since his debut in 2013, Oates is now facing the reality that this season could be his swan song at the club.

Following a turbulent 2024 season where the Broncos went from Grand Final contenders to missing out on the NRL Finals, changes are afoot in the off-season, leaving Oates in limbo.

Opening up on the popular sports talk show "Robin & Kip on KIIS 97.3," Oates disclosed that the Broncos have signaled that they do not intend to extend his contract and keep him on board beyond this year.

This revelation comes as a shock considering Oates' standout performance in 2022, where he notched an impressive 20 tries in 22 games, capping off with a successful stint in the QLD Maroons State of Origin team.

However, the sporting landscape is ever-changing, and Oates now finds himself facing an uncertain future as he navigates this new chapter in his Rugby League career.
