In a shocking turn of events, Rabbitohs stalwart Damien Cook has thrown his support behind legendary coach Wayne Bennett, claiming that the seasoned mentor is the key to the Bunnies' future success.
Cook, who has had the privilege of being under Bennett's tutelage from 2019 to 2021, during which the team reached two preliminary finals and the 2021 grand final, believes that Bennett's return in 2025 will bring out the best in the squad.
The Rabbitohs hooker is confident that Bennett's leadership will steer the team towards victory once again.
With the recent departure of former protege Jason Demetriou as South Sydney's head coach, the stage is set for Bennett to make a triumphant comeback to the iconic NRL club.
The 74-year-old, known for his seven premiership wins, is poised to take the reins from interim coach Ben Hornby, with a reported three-year deal on the table.
Bennett is adamant that he needs ample time to work his magic and shape the team according to his vision.
The Rabbitohs are said to be receptive to this request, offering Bennett the opportunity to finish his coaching career at the historic NRL franchise.
As anticipation builds for Bennett's return, Cook expressed his enthusiasm at the prospect of once again being under the wing of the illustrious coach.
"I think someone like Wayne, there are certain players in the game that you want to have that presence and you want to play alongside, and I think Wayne is one of those coaches you want to play for as well," remarked Cook to reporters at North Sydney Oval, setting the tone for a bright future for the Bunnies under Bennett's guidance.
