Cobbo's Dolphins Dreams: Fin-ing for a New School

Mal Meninga, coach of the Perth Bears, has emphasized the need for Selwyn Cobbo to resolve some "off-field" issues, as speculation arises about Cobbo's future after his time with the Dolphins.

Recently, the Dolphins confirmed a one-year deal to sign the former Broncos star for the 2026 season, allowing the possibility for him to join the Bears in 2027, when they will officially enter the NRL.

Cobbo's situation at the Broncos has been complicated; he was demoted to reserve grade and faced competition for his place after the club signed others, including Josiah Karapani, and extended contracts for key players like Adam Reynolds and Kotoni Staggs.

With the Broncos offering Cobbo about $300,000 per year compared to his current $650,000 salary, his departure seemed imminent.

Dolphins' CEO Terry Reader expressed optimism about Cobbo, stating, "Selwyn is an accomplished player who has done some amazing things at both Origin and NRL level already.

But we believe he has untapped potential to go to even greater heights in the game and are excited about what he can do in a Dolphins jersey." Cobbo will complete the current season with the Broncos before joining the Dolphins in November for pre-season training.

However, the one-year contract with Dolphins raises questions about his long-term plans, especially with Meninga's interest in acquiring him for the Bears.

Meninga recently noted, "It'd be silly not to consider someone like Selwyn...

There's no doubting Selwyn's talent, so you've got to talk to those guys if they are available."

Overall, Cobbo's transition from the Broncos to the Dolphins heralds a significant, albeit temporary, shift in his NRL career, setting the stage for potential future moves as the landscape of the league continues to evolve.
