Selwyn Cobbo's future with the Brisbane Broncos is under scrutiny, with the St George Illawarra Dragons interested in signing him, potentially as soon as this season.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Cobbo's situation worsened when he was dropped to reserve grade three weeks ago by coach Michael Maguire.
Since then, Josiah Karapani has stepped up, scoring four tries in two games, leading to his two-year re-signing with Brisbane.
This development may signal the end of Cobbo's tenure with the Broncos.
Reports indicate Cobbo met with Dragons officials in Wollongong last week while the Broncos were on bye.
The Dragons view Cobbo, 23, as a potential future replacement for Clint Gutherson at fullback.
In addition, they are considering allowing Tyrell Sloan to explore opportunities with other clubs, as his $500,000 deal runs through 2026.
The Dragons are pushing to secure Cobbo before the fast-approaching June 30 deadline, but the Broncos seem reluctant to release him before the conclusion of his contract this season.
The Broncos have also signed Grant Anderson from the Melbourne Storm for next year and are only willing to extend Cobbo's contract for one year at $300,000.
"Selwyn Cobbo is unlikely to be at the club beyond this year," noted reporter Michael Chammas on Channel 9.
He added, "The Dragons are waiting to see what the Broncos do.
They want to make sure that he's ready to leave Brisbane before they make him an offer."
As time is running short for negotiations, the situation remains tense, with both clubs keenly watching for how the next steps unfold.
