South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett praised the NRL's decision to move their round 1 clash with the Dolphins from Brisbane to Sydney, calling it a "great decision" despite some backlash.
Several players stayed in Queensland to be with families as Cyclone Alfred approached, but Bennett stated that the move did not give the Rabbitohs an advantage.
He also defended the NRL's call, contrasting it with the AFL's decision to cancel opening-round matches in Queensland due to safety concerns.
Bennett emphasized the importance of the decision for everyone involved in the game, including fans and TV stations.
He acknowledged the potential criticism no matter what choice was made, stating, "If it had have been called off, you find fault with us.
If we put it on, you find fault with us." However, he firmly believed that the NRL officials made the right call, saying, "They have done the right thing."
Despite some Dolphins players withdrawing from the game, including Kodi Nikorima, Mark Nicholls, and Kenny Bromwich, who Bennett coached at the Dolphins last year, the South Sydney coach maintained that the decision was in the best interest of all stakeholders.
He expressed his support for the NRL's handling of the situation, remarking, "It's important to everyone involved in the game, the fans, the TV stations … we go back there, they are playing the home game there later in the year.
I think it was a great decision."
Overall, Bennett's comments highlighted his approval of the NRL's choice to move the game, emphasizing the need to prioritize the safety and well-being of those involved in the sport.
Despite facing criticism, he stood by the decision, asserting that it was the right move for all parties involved.
