Nathan Cleary is poised to make history by matching Andrew Johns and Mitchell Pearce for the most games played as halfback for NSW in Origin, as he prepares for his 16th match on Wednesday at Optus Stadium.
With his eyes set on winning his fourth Origin series, Cleary views the return of Jarome Luai-brought in to replace the injured Mitchell Moses-as a significant boost for the team.
Cleary remarked, "It is a bit of that feel of that 2021 grand-final team," referencing the Panthers' successful 2021 premiership squad, which influences the Blues' current lineup.
The team now includes nine members from that dynasty, including 18th man Matt Burton.
Lucai's seamless reintegration is a positive development, as Cleary noted their established understanding: "We understand each other's games pretty well.
So in that regard, it was a pretty seamless transition with him coming back in."
Despite their strong combination, Cleary and Luai have faced recent challenges, losing three out of their last four Origin matches as a duo.
The duo has been together since they were 15 and boasts an impressive winning record of 107 from 134 games at all levels.
With Luai back in the mix, Cleary is optimistic that their deep-rooted synergy will help propel them to a better performance in their upcoming clash against the Maroons.
