Ivan Cleary, the coach of the Panthers and father to Nathan, has expressed concern over his son's groin injury, admitting he's uncertain about its severity because Nathan has been "ghosting" him.
Following the Panthers' impressive 28-18 victory over the Warriors, Ivan stated he doesn't believe the injury is serious, although he hasn't had the opportunity to discuss it in depth with Nathan.
The injury reportedly occurred during State of Origin camp with NSW, preventing Nathan from kicking goals in the second game against Queensland.
Despite playing through the pain, Nathan did not engage in much kicking during the first half of that match.
"I don't really have any more of an update," Ivan remarked on Saturday night.
"He got injured the day before the game and played and finished the game.
I don't think it's a major thing, but he's been 'ghosting' me so I haven't really had a chance to talk to him about it." His acknowledgment of Nathan's lack of communication was made light-heartedly, eliciting laughter from reporters present.
This uncertainty surrounding Nathan's participation comes at a critical time for the Panthers, who are striving to solidify their standing in the top eight.
They face a daunting challenge in Round 17 against the first-placed Bulldogs, and Nathan's availability for this crucial match remains unclear.
Additionally, with the third State of Origin match scheduled for the following weekend, the Panthers might choose to rest Nathan leading into that game.
The team also has a bye in Round 18, which could influence their decision regarding his immediate playtime.
Losing Nathan for an extended period would be a significant setback for the reigning champions, particularly as he would join teammate Scott Sorensen on the sidelines.
