Rumors surrounding Nathan Cleary's potential switch to rugby union have intensified following comments from NRL great Tim Horan.
Horan has indicated that he has heard increasing speculation about Cleary being "quite keen" to pursue a rugby career.
This news aligns with earlier concerns raised by Matty Johns, who warned that Cleary's relationship with Mary Fowler, a player for Manchester City in the UK, might prompt the four-time premiership winner to move overseas.
Fowler's commitments in the UK and Europe could influence Cleary's career choices, especially since he has previously expressed interest in playing in the English Super League.
Johns commented on the implications of a potential move, stating, "My only fear with Nathan is him going to England puts him pretty much in the spotlight or basically he's right in the backyard of these big French rugby clubs and European rugby clubs." He suggested that being in such proximity to these clubs increases the likelihood of Cleary being targeted for a recruitment push, saying, "And there would be a temptation there.
Some of them (rugby clubs) would probably look to make a bid sooner rather than later, that's the only thing that would concern me."
Horan's comments on the matter imply that the NRL should also be vigilant about threats from Australian rugby, as he suggested that Cleary's interest in switching codes could be legitimate.
He mentioned, "There's been some rumours the last two months that he's quite keen," affirming that he has heard this information independently and asserting that Cleary might indeed be considering a transition to rugby.
This discussion was sparked during a segment on Stan Sports' Rugby Heaven program, where panelists explored prospects for Rugby Australia to attract stars from the NRL.
Cleary's standout performance in the Blues' Game 1 victory over the Maroons has only heightened interest in his future prospects in rugby.
In summary, as Nathan Cleary's connections with Mary Fowler and his interest in international opportunities come to light, the NRL finds itself navigating growing speculation about a potential career shift toward rugby union, raising concerns among its key figures.
