The Penrith Panthers believe Nathan Cleary will be ready to return for their match against the Bulldogs in round 17 after a groin injury sustained in a training session just before State of Origin Game 2.
Cleary struggled with the injury during the game against Queensland, noticeably opting not to kick long in the first half, leading other players, like Zac Lomax, to take over those duties.
New South Wales' performance suffered, with an underwhelming first half contributing to their loss.
This situation raised eyebrows, especially since there was no prior indication of Cleary's injury.
Queensland great Cameron Smith observed during commentary that Cleary's performance in the first half was puzzling, considering the compression bandage on his leg.
Smith noted, "I don't think he's been right all night." Coach Brad Fittler later revealed that Cleary had shown signs of struggle during the captain's run but opted to limit his long-kicking to mitigate the groin tightness.
Fittler remarked, "He just felt a bit tight in his groin, so we wanted to limit the amount of force he put in there," acknowledging Cleary's toughness in pushing through.
Despite the injury being kept under wraps-with reports indicating even the Panthers were initially unaware, as the injury occurred on Tuesday-Cleary was confirmed in the starting lineup just 90 minutes before kick-off.
The Daily Telegraph indicated that the Panthers are optimistic about his availability next week, with Cleary himself stating he should be "right to go" after some rest.
