Nathan Cleary has addressed concerns about his goal-kicking ability amid speculation that he might step aside for Zac Lomax in the upcoming State of Origin Game 2.
Cleary had a challenging outing in Game 1, missing three out of four conversions, despite NSW's 18-6 victory.
Reports indicated that Cleary allowed Lomax to attempt the final conversion, which he also missed, heightening doubts about whether Cleary would take on the kicking responsibilities in the next match.
During the captain's run at Optus Stadium, viewers observed both players practicing their kicks, but Cleary took a more reserved approach, leading to further speculation.
Fox Sports reporter Dane Lillingstone noted, "It was odd watching Cleary in training not undergo his conversions with maximum effort," sparking discussions about his fitness.
However, Cleary dismissed these concerns, stating he was visualizing his kicks during practice.
Addressing the situation, Cleary expressed confidence heading into the match, ensuring fans that he had no issues adapting to the oval shape of Optus Stadium.
"I've never found it too difficult to adapt to the oval fields because they have the signage set up as a rectangle around the field," he clarified.
He emphasized that training on the ground the day before helps players familiarize themselves, making the transition easier.
In summary, while Cleary faced scrutiny after his Game 1 performance and training sessions raised questions about his readiness to kick, he remains confident and focused on adapting for Game 2.
