Rematch becomes a real mismatch as Walsh injured and Cleary shines

After pulling off a stunning grand final upset to break Brisbane's spirits last October, Nathan Cleary once again proved to be a thorn in the Broncos' side at BlueBet Stadium on Thursday, leading the reigning champions to a commanding 34-12 victory.

Cleary ended the game with three brilliant try assists, three crucial line break assists, and four impressive tackle breaks, while Dylan Edwards ran an impressive 307 metres as the Panthers continued their dominance over Brisbane with seven wins in their last eight encounters.

The night got off to a rough start for the Broncos when fullback Reece Walsh was forced off the field after just four minutes following a nasty head clash with Taylan May, and unfortunately, he was unable to make a return.

May found himself in hot water after failing to lower his body height and attempt a tackle, resulting in a penalty goal converted by Brisbane's new kicker Kotoni Staggs, giving them an early 2-0 lead.

The Panthers hit their stride in the 14th minute when Cleary delivered a perfect long pass to winger Sunia Turuva, who crossed the try line out wide, extending the premiers' lead to 4-2.

The home team continued to apply pressure, with makeshift fullback Selwyn Cobbo doing a commendable job to defend against two grubbers and keep Brisbane's line intact.

Eventually, their persistence paid off as Izack Tago breezed past a Brendan Piakura tackle to score, with Cleary converting for a 10-2 lead.
