Nathan Cleary has addressed rumours linking him to a switch to rugby union, largely fueled by speculation that the move would bring him closer to his girlfriend, Mary Fowler, who plays soccer for Manchester City.

Despite these reports, the Penrith Panthers star emphatically dismissed the idea during a media session while in State of Origin camp with NSW.

Cleary explained that he does not want to "waste" his prime years in rugby league.

He is currently contracted to the Panthers until the end of 2027 and is positioned to potentially sign the largest contract in rugby league history upon re-signing.

"I think I've got enough challenges in front of me playing rugby league," he stated.

Cleary emphasized his commitment to maximizing his potential in rugby league, noting, "I've put so much into it and it's been my passion for so long...

I don't want to waste that."

He acknowledged the challenges that come with the season, particularly reflecting on the Panthers' early-year performance as a motivating factor.

"Going back to Penrith and the way we started the year, that's a challenge in itself and I've found motivation in that.

You can't take winning for granted," he added.

While Cleary acknowledged that, due to his upbringing in New Zealand, he has experienced the popularity of rugby union and occasionally watches international matches, he remains firmly committed to rugby league.

"I do watch a bit of the international game," he remarked about rugby union, but clarified that he is focused on his current sport.

In summary, Cleary is dedicated to his rugby league career and has no intention of pursuing a switch to rugby union, despite the allure of a potential overseas assignment that could place him closer to Fowler.
