The Bulldogs finished 12th after placing third last year, missing the finals and losing rhythm late in the season.
According to The Herald, Cameron Ciraldo defended his players at the club's awards night.
"There is a lot of outside noise... There is a lot of stuff these guys have to deal with," Ciraldo said.
He praised their unity despite the criticism.
Ciraldo said the disappointment could produce future success: "it's going to define the success in the future," he said.
He cited players who continued despite injuries.
Max King broke his jaw against Penrith but played on; Vili Kikau tore his pec against Brisbane, while Jacob Preston broke his arm.
Stephen Crichton returned four weeks early from a shoulder AC injury, and Jaeman Salmon had two finger surgeries but refused to miss a game.
Ciraldo also praised the doctor's extensive use of painkilling needles.
The Bulldogs will regroup during pre-season while targeting a successful 2027 campaign.
