In a remarkable Test debut, Australia fullback Abbi Church played a pivotal role in a challenging 10-4 victory over New Zealand in the Pacific Cup.

At 27, Church stepped into the starting lineup after first-choice fullback Tamika Upton was sidelined with a calf strain. She not only set up a pivotal try but also scored one herself at Eden Park.

The match featured a physically intense showdown between the leading teams in women's rugby, with both sides displaying exceptional skills. They are scheduled to face each other again in the tournament's final in Sydney on November 9.

The opening half showcased robust defense from both teams, making it a fiercely contested battle.

Halfback Jesse Southwell attempted a repeat of a successful kick that had led to a spectacular try for winger Julia Robinson the previous week against Samoa. However, this time, Robinson was unable to secure the ball as it narrowly escaped her reach.

The home team displayed an impressive kicking strategy, particularly through five-eighth Patricia Maliepo. Half Raecene McGregor executed a clever low kick intended for fullback Apii Nicholls, but Church thwarted the attempt with a last-minute defense.

Church, representing Parramatta, made an impressive 197m during the game and showed remarkable awareness on a short-side play, facilitating a try for the talented winger Jessica Sergis, which was the only one in the first half. In the 32nd minute, Sergis outmaneuvered three defenders with remarkable strength and resolve.

Church added to the score in the 43rd minute after expertly pursuing a kick from Southwell, extending the lead to 10-0 for the visitors.
