Charlie Staines Leaving Wests Tigers for New Team

Samoan international Charlie Staines is poised to join a new team for the 2026 season, marking his departure from the Wests Tigers and the NRL altogether.

As one of the fastest players in the league, Staines stood out as the Tigers' most dependable back-line player during the 2024 season, participating in nearly every match. However, his performance this season has not mirrored that success.

He has been overlooked for positions in favor of players such as Luke Laulilii, Jeral Skelton, Sunia Turuva, and Taylan May, leading to his relegation to the NSW Cup for most of the season.

Despite this setback, when given the opportunity in the first-grade squad, Staines managed to score four tries, compile 16 tackle busts, and average 161 running meters across seven appearances.

Following the news that the Wests Tigers will not re-sign him, Staines is expected to sign with the Catalans Dragons in the Super League for the upcoming season, where he will reunite with teammate Solomona Faataape, as reported by All Out Rugby League.

Being relatively young, the versatile back aims to make an impact in the overseas league and strengthen his case for a return to the NRL in the future, especially with the addition of two expansion clubs-Perth Bears and PNG 2028-before the 2030 season.
