Canberra extend Sanders amid halves uncertainty

Black's impressive debut in Canberra's 2026 finale has complicated the Raiders' halves plans for 2027.

After waiting all season, he debuted in Townsville when Sanders was omitted and impressed.

Canberra extended Sanders' deal through 2028, beyond his existing 2027 commitment; he had said negotiating elsewhere from November 1 was unlikely.

Sanders said, "Two years ago, the club put a lot of faith in me to bring me down to Canberra.

I can't thank Ricky enough for all the belief he's given me, and I just want to repay that now," he said.

Sanders, Black and five-eighth Ethan Strange are all in the Top 30, leaving Canberra to settle its halves pairing.

A centre move for Strange seems unlikely with Sasagi established there and Timoko in form; a switch to lock has also been floated amid middle-third departures and Hopoi's injury.

Black could spend much of 2027 in reserve grade again, potentially seeking a release or another club rather than staying through 2028.
